How to prepare machinery and plant for a crane lift
Machinery and plant lifting can be required during equipment delivery, relocation, installation, maintenance or site changes. Good preparation helps the crane operator understand the load and coordinate the lift with the people managing the equipment and surrounding work area.
While every machine and site is different, several pieces of information are consistently useful when planning a lift.
Identify the machinery accurately
Provide the make, model and type of machine wherever possible. Photos are useful, but they should be supported by specifications or other reliable information about the equipment.
Explain whether the machinery is complete or has attachments, tooling, fluids, counterweights or other components fitted. These details may affect its weight, dimensions and centre of gravity.
Confirm the lifting weight
The operating weight shown in a brochure may not match the machine’s condition on the day of the lift. Added attachments, stored materials and modifications can increase the load.
Use manufacturer information, engineering documents or other verified records rather than estimating. If the weight is uncertain, raise this during the initial discussion so the correct information can be obtained before the work proceeds.
Locate the approved lifting points
Machinery should be lifted using suitable points identified by the manufacturer or relevant technical documentation. These points need to be accessible and in appropriate condition.
Remove covers or obstructions only where authorised and make sure the people responsible for the equipment are available to answer technical questions. The crane operator should not be expected to guess where an unfamiliar machine can be safely connected.
Understand the centre of gravity
Machines are not always evenly balanced. Motors, tanks, booms, attachments and internal components can concentrate weight on one side.
Information about the centre of gravity helps with planning the lifting arrangement and controlling the equipment during movement. This is particularly important when the final position allows limited room for adjustment.
Check the crane access and working area
The crane needs a suitable route to the working position and adequate space around the lift. Review gates, driveways, ground conditions, overhead services, nearby buildings and active traffic areas.
Clear materials, vehicles and unused equipment from the proposed working zone. If other trades are operating nearby, coordinate the lift timing so the area can be managed without unnecessary conflict.
Prepare the destination
Confirm exactly where the machinery will be placed and how it should be oriented. The receiving area, foundations or supports should be completed and checked by the appropriate project team before the lift begins.
If the machinery is being installed inside a building or close to other equipment, provide measurements and photos of the available clearances.
